Always keep backups of your photos/work.

My laptop drive died recently, taking with it probably six months worth of photos. Crap.

I think the drive has physical damage. It spins up, but makes tons of noise and at this point is not even recognized by the OS.

I have yet to try the freezer method, but I think a recovery company might be my only option.

Well, if makes noise, DON'T start it again, it just will crash more the data. If inside are soo many important data, a data recovery with physical damage can cost you about 500€... bleh.

I thought it was Datafile System damage, that can be much easier...

Or another thing what you can do is have the risk, open the HDD and use another lens from another HDD, EXACTLY the same model. But this is much more complicated... you have even to calibrate the lens.

I had the same mindfuck in summer... my RAID of 1TB died and with it, 600GB of data.
